My last post centered around love (it was, after all, a week before Valentine’s Day). I’d like to continue the theme of love and introduce you to another word the ancient Greeks had for love: Philautia or self-love.
This word can often be misinterpreted because it can be associated with undue regard for oneself or one’s own interests or narcissism. Self-love is self-care. Self-care is not selfish.
Think of it this way – I can’t give away what I don’t have. If I’m not spending time each day taking care of my own needs, I won’t have love to give my family, friends, co-workers and clients. And if I’m not reading and listening to positive information, it will be difficult to give support and encouragement to those around me.
Most news channels and social media are filled with negativity. Avoid it at all costs! Instead, seek positive, inspirational and motivational messages to focus on. You can find videos from people like John Maxwell, Jim Rohn, Mary Kay Ash, Tony Robbins, and Jack Canfield (just to name a few) on YouTube.
