Taking Personal Responsibility

In light of the country’s reaction to the recent election, I thought I’d share this quote from Jim Rohn, an American entrepreneur.

You must take personal responsibility. You cannot change the circumstances, the seasons, or the wind, but you can change yourself.

That is something you have charge of.

It starts with youIt is interesting how often people blame something or someone for their current circumstances, when all along we are where we are because of the past choices we’ve made. It is hard to admit, but if we continue to blame the weather, our parents, our boss, (or the outcome of the presidential election), we will not accomplish our destiny.  Anyone who has accomplished a great deal in life, regardless of their circumstances, has focused their own actions on those things they can control and avoided complaining and pointing the finger at others.

We would do well to take a lesson from the life of Mohandas K. Gandhi.  Early in life, he was afraid of the dark, afraid of people, afraid of himself and he regarded himself as a coward.  He set out to change himself and some time before his death at age seventy-eight, he described himself as a “self-made man”.  He is known for saying; “How can I control others if I cannot control myself.”  We all have this power of self-control, yet so few of us use it. Our destiny, may not be to free a nation as Gandhi did, but we can follow his pattern in our daily life.
